Tips for Planning the Best Weekend Getaway

by Robert S. Chancellor

It’s easy to get caught up in the routine of life. We wake up, go to the gym, take a shower, get the kids ready for school, and head off to work. But every once in a while, we find ourselves needing to take a break in order to mix up the routine. We need a reprieve from the daily grind that doesn’t necessarily require a week-long vacation to the Bahamas.

Whether you are looking to book a random cheap flight from an inexpensive airline or are wanting to plan a mini stay-cation, we’ve got some helpful tips to make the absolute most of your weekend getaway.

Limit Your Travel Time

A weekend getaway limits you on the amount of time you have to spend relaxing and regrouping before you get back into the “real world.” It’s important to make sure you aren’t spending all of your time traveling to and from airports, sleeping on long flights, or having to take trains or ferries to get you to your next destination.

Before you know it, you’ve spent most of your time traveling and only a few short hours actually enjoying your vacation. Don’t forget that travel can be taxing on the body so limit the amount of time you actually spend in transit.

Don’t Forget to Unplug

A weekend away should be exactly what it sounds like. It should be an opportunity to step away from responsibilities, work, and all of your additional screens. Set up an away message on your work email and maybe even consider setting your phone on airplane mode.

It’s perfectly okay to take a break from social media and the rest of the world. The important part is that you are taking care of yourself before trying to cater to the needs of everyone else.

Hit the Open Road

Not everyone can afford to book a flight out a day or two before you decide to take a little break. A weekend getaway could be the perfect time to pack a bag and jump in the car for a road trip. Maybe you have a destination in mind, or perhaps you’re driving until you don’t feel like it anymore. You can turn anything into a fun adventure when you are the one steering the ship!

Pack for Safety

As the saying goes, plan for the worst and hope for the best. If your idea of a weekend away involves camping out in a remote area in the mountains, you’ll want to pack for safety. Have extra batteries on hand along with flashlights for when it gets dark. Pack a first aid kit, trash bags, lighters, matches, and a firestarter if you plan on making a fire to stay warm.

On the off chance that you run into a wild animal such as a bear, you may want to consider bringing a handgun with you for extra protection. It’s especially important to pack for safety if you plan on taking your weekend away completely alone.

Take on a Trip By Yourself

Speaking of taking a trip by yourself, just because you are planning to take a short vacation doesn’t mean that you have to go with someone. Going on a solo weekend getaway could be exactly what you need to rejuvenate yourself.

Take it as an opportunity to remember what it’s like to reconnect and simply hang out with just yourself. That way, when you come back to your loved ones, you will be able to have a full tank of mental and emotional gas so you can be present with them throughout the coming weeks.

Follow Through With Your Plan

Talking about taking a weekend getaway is one thing. Actually getting yourself into the car or clicking purchase on your flights is something completely different. The most important thing you can do for yourself is to make sure that you follow through with your plans to take your weekend getaway.

Remember, at the end of the day, your need for a weekend getaway is because you need a chance to unplug, regroup, and rejuvenate yourself before you fall into burnout. Make sure you are taking the type of weekend away that best suits your needs to make the most out of your few short days away.
